Receiver of Taxes

Michael Giordano

This department collects all Town and Village taxes. In addition, it acts as the collection agency for School taxes and for State and County taxes.

As a service to residents, the Receiver of Taxes sends Tax bills before the 1st day of the month. Such bills must be paid by the last day of that month in order to avoid a penalty. Even if your bill becomes lost in the mail, you are still responsible for paying your taxes on time. It is the homeowners' responsibility to notify the Tax office in writing of any change of address, or status of their ownership. (Mortgage Satisfaction, Mortgage Refinance or Home being sold). Tax questions should be directed to 670-3040. In addition to tax bills, we also send out delinquent tax notices after each collection.

Five times a year, tax bills are sent out. Town and Village taxes are due in February and June; School taxes in January and September; and State and County taxes in April. If taxes are not paid on time, the Westchester County Tax Law Section 550-A requires that a penalty be charged.

Although Harrison does mail tax bills to property owners, this custom is not required by law, and if the mail is delayed or if you are away, you are still liable for the taxes and any penalty, so you should be aware of the amount you owe and when it is due. Taxes can be paid by check, or in cash at the Tax Receiver's Office, located in the Municipal Building, from Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from June through August).

The bill includes real estate tax, fire district tax, water supply tax, sewer tax and perhaps a special assessment district tax. The records are public and a breakdown of taxes may be inspected at the Receiver's office.

Allocation of tax money collected is approximately:

  • 56% for school expenses
  • 25% for Town costs and services
  • 19% for County taxes
